Daily Essential Oils User Guide

daily-essential-oils-user-guide

My wife and I have been using essential oils for years. I’m actually a late-bloomer compared to Mama Z who has been using these precious natural solutions since she was in her teens! We’ve tried several brands and have completely rearranged our medicine cabinets over the years, and have become leaders in the industry as my articles, books, and conference presentations grows in popularity.

Whether you’re a veteran looking for some new tips or a beginner who wants to start using oils but don’t know where to start, here’s my Daily Essential Oils User Guide that you and your family can start using today!

Note: if you’ve been following me for a while, you may have noticed that I update my articles regularly. Researching Biblical health truths is my life’s work and I oftentimes find myself making corrections to older articles and books as my understanding of these topics continue to grow. This post is no exception and I completely revamped it on November 7, 2016. If you find any glaring errors or inconsistencies, I kindly ask you to email me at Info@DrEricZ.com and I will amend this piece accordingly.

Do’s and Don’ts

eoc-free_600x150

Before I dive into some of the ways that you can use essential oils as part of your daily natural health regimen, there are some “housekeeping” items we need to discuss. Here are some do’s and don’ts.

Daily Do’s:

  1. Use essential oils aromatically in a diffuser, inhaler, spritzer and other fun ways.
  2. Add essential oils in your daily body care regimen.
  3. Be careful – and learn the basics. My Aromatherapy 101 article will help.
  4. Enjoy the good things in life! There’s nothing like one drop of lemon or orange oil in a 32 ounce glass liter of sparkling water with some liquid stevia as a special soda pop treat.
  5. Have fun & be empowered! Using essential oils and other natural therapies is a life-changing experience for most people and remember to enjoy the journey as you learn all about them!

Daily Do Not’s:

  1. Consume essential oils for “prevention.” This is wasteful and dangerous, and I was a victim of the take-a-drop-of-essential-oil under your tongue (or in your water) everyday myth until I irritated my esophagus and developed acid reflux! The more I learn about EOs, the less I consume them – only for specific health conditions, or my special soda. 😉 And, no, it doesn’t matter how “pure” or “therapeutic” they are. Daily consumption is NOT the most effective (and medicinal) way to use them, and it has taken me 3 years of trial & error (lots of error) and literally hundreds (if not thousands) of research hours to get to this “revelation.” So, please learn from my mistakes! 🙂
  2. Believe that “there is an oil for that.” Essential oils have changed my life so much that I have devoted much of my personal and profession lives to sharing the message that they are truly God’s Medicine. Seriously, I’m the “oil” guy and I’ve been blessed with the opportunity to be featured on countless health summits, conferences and documentaries. Yet, let’s be real. Like anything, essential oils are limited by what they can and we should not fall into the trap that they are the end-all cure because misguided hope will disappoint.

Ok, now that we’ve cleaned house, let’s get to work…

Daily Practice: Aromatherapy

When people that essential oils have been used for thousands of years, they’re referring to the art of aromatherapy when tribal cultures burned plants to make incense for spiritual and medicinal purposes. Remember, modern-day distillation didn’t exist back then and our ancestors never had access to what we know now as “essential oils.” Still, the use of aromatic herbs, roots, flowers and fruits was widely enjoyed.

Throw away the glade plug-ins and wall flowers! They emit toxic chemicals that have been linked to neurotoxicity and cancer, which is why every house should have multiple diffusers running throughout the day. Not only will they help make your house smell and feel refreshing, but they also emit aromatic essential oil “volatiles” that have significant medicinal properties.

Mama Z and I love the diffusers at Aroma2Go. Their USB ultrasonic diffuser is just about the coolest thing I have ever used, and all of their products are designed in Belgium. This gives their products a sophisticated “Euro” look and you’re going to fall in love with their diffusers, wraps, cases and necklaces! I’m buddies with the CEO and I asked if he could give you a special gift for visiting my website to get you started on your aromatherapy journey, and we came up with this: use the coupon code DRZ10” to get 10% off your entire first purchase! Isn’t that cool!

Research studies have linked inhaling diffused lavender EO to:

  • Decreased oxidative stress
  • Reduced postnatal depression and anxiety
  • Improved mood for people suffering with PTSD
  • Enhanced sleep and decreased moodiness
  • Increased overall health status
  • Prevented allergic reactions

Applying diluted lavender EO directly on cuts and burns has also been shown to speed would healing. On a personal note, I have extremely sensitive skin, and I have a tendency to nick myself pretty good when I shave my face. Whenever this happens, I put a drop of diluted lavender on my cut and the bleeding usually stops immediately!

  • For burns or eczema, mix lavender with coconut oils in a 1:5 ratio to speed up the healing process.
  • For sunburn or dry skin, add 5 drops of lavender in 1 ounce of fresh frozen aloe, aloe vera gel or coconut oil.

Daily Practice – Body Care

Next to aromatic use, safe topical essential oil application is a must for anyone wanting to experience Abundant Life health and wellness. The benefit it two-fold:

  1. Essential oils penetrate into the blood stream within minutes of being applied on the skin, and are completely metabolized within hours. This means that your body will benefit from the healing chemical compounds in the essential oil for only a limited time, which (unlike drugs that don’t fully metabolize in the body) gives you more control of your body.
  2. When you apply topically, you also receive the aromatic benefit as the volatile organic compounds reach your nose!

We try to DIY as much as possible in our home and include EOs in everything from our toothpaste to body lotion and liquid hand soap. The aroma in our home is intoxicating and my family and I always get asked why we “smell so good!” Chances are that  you’re applying aromatic compounds on your skin as it is with conventional, store-bought body care items. So, why not use the real deal, instead of the synthetic stuff that has been connected with cancer, autoimmune disease and neurocognitive disorders?

While Americans are incessantly enticed by the intoxicating aromas, flashy packaging, and false promises of sustained youth and beauty from health care products, the global beauty market is expected to reach $265 billion in 2017! Now, there is nothing wrong with making a buck, but one question we all should be asking is what is the real cost of using these products to our health?

“Well, nothing.” You may be thinking to yourself. “I don’t eat them, I just put them on my skin!”

True, but did you know that your skin is the largest organ in your body and EVERYTHING you put ON your skin goes INTO your body! Just think about the price of beauty when you consider the long-term effects of putting chemicals on your body every day!

But don’t worry yourself sick over it. ALL of your body care products can be made with essential oils!

  1. Be sure to visit my wife’s DIY Essential Oil Body Care Recipes database for tips on how to make everything from flee shampoo for dogs to toothpaste!
  2. Also, don’t forget to check out our DIY Essential Oil Cleaners Database to protect you from all the toxins conventional household cleaning products!

Not-So-Daily Practice: Oil Pulling

Love, love, love oil pulling! Anyone can do it and all you need is some essential oils and a carrier oil that’s probably in your kitchen already like olive, coconut or sesame. I have found that it’s the easiest, most effective way for anyone to start using essential oils to get immediate results!

With that said, I still don’t recommend oil pulling every single day. Like most natural therapies that cause a strong detoxifying response, I give my body a break once in a while. Personally, I like to oil pull a couple times per week.

Oil pulling works by detoxifying your oral cavity in a similar way that soap cleans dirty dishes. Because most toxins are fat-soluble, it literally sucks the dirt (toxins) out of your mouth and creates an antiseptic oral environment that contributes to the proper flow of dental liquid that is needed to prevent cavities and disease. The ancient Ayurvedic system for health in India has used oil pulling for years to treat just under 30 systemic diseases, ranging from headaches and tooth decay to diabetes and asthma.

To help detox, keep your smile bright and shining and freshen up your breath mix essential oils with unrefined, organic coconut oil or another carrier. Here are some tips:

  • Like most other detoxification procedures, the best time to oil pull is first thing in the morning, right after you get out of bed.
  • All you need to do is swish between 1 – 2 tablespoons of the coconut or sesame oil and 1 drop of an essential oil (or EO blend) in your mouth for 10 – 20 minutes. Easy peasy!
  • Don’t worry, you won’t even notice 20 minutes have gone by if you do this during your normal morning routine (i.e. while you shower, put your clothes on, and prep for the day).
  • Be sure NOT to spit out the mixture into your sink or the coconut oil will harden and may end up clogging up your pipes.
  • Either spit it out in the trash or in a jar or some other container.
  • Immediately afterward, rinse your mouth out with warm water.
  • Use salt water for added antimicrobial properties.
  • Don’t be shocked if the oil/saliva mixture you spit out is milky white or yellow.
  • Finally, brush your teeth as normal.

Note: This should be a relatively relaxing process, so don’t think that you need to swish your mouth with oil for the entire time – you’ll be bound to wear out your jaw muscles! Simply move the oil in your mouth and through your teeth without swallowing any of it.

Oil Pulling & EO Applications: I recommend oil pulling no more than 3-4x per week.

  • Add 1 drop of clove, lemon or orange essential oil with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil.
  • If you’re battling an infection, you may want to would change it up and use 1 drop of an immunity blend as a holistic remedy.

Oral Care

In addition to oil pulling, try using EO instead of (or in addition to toothpaste). One drop of clove, peppermint, or orange on your toothbrush will supercharge your fluoride-free toothpaste, or if you want to make your own remineralizing toothpaste, just combine Himalayan pink sea salt, baking soda, unrefined coconut oil and essential oils. Some of our favorite combinations are:

Not-So-Daily Practice: Morning Immune Booster

Arguably the most potent medicinal essential oil out there, recent research studies suggest that frankincense can kill cancer. It also promotes health and vitality in neighboring non-cancerous cells through a process known as “cell selectivity,” which is pretty amazing when you think about it! Before we all drink a bottle of frankincense in the race for the cure, it’s important to put things into perspective and remember that the studies out there are in vitro (cells in a petri dish). We still have a long way to go before doctors will start prescribing oils as a viable cancer treatment, but social proof resounds as the testimonials on the Internet support the possibility that people can receive significant benefits from regular frankincense consumption.

In addition to frankincense, there are other essential oils that pack a super-powerful antioxidant boost with clove topping the charts. I like to make an immunity blend that includes 1 drop of each of these oils: cinnamoncloveeucalyptuslemonorange, and rosemary.

To help prevent getting sick around flu season and boost your immune system try using my immune boosting shot 2-3x per week at the onset of a cold or around flu season.

Ingredients
Instructions
  1. Mix together in a glass bowl and enjoy twice daily at the onset of a cold, or once per day for prevention.
  2. Wash down with pure, filtered water.
  3. Be sure to not use for more than two weeks at a time.
*Immune Boost Blend:
  1. Equal parts CinnamonCloveEucalyptusRosemary, Orange and Lemon essential oils

Recipe Notes

* This can be enjoyed straight or with a little bit of water to wash it down. Depends on your palate.

* It is not recommended to add this mixture to hot tea because this will kill the enzymes in the honey and can alter the composition of the essential oils and vitamin C. If you want to add to your tea, make sure it is cooled down to room temp.

Safety Notes

  1. Be careful not to take this mixture daily for extended periods of time (more than 2 weeks). Our bodies quickly develop resistance and so do bacteria and viruses! Alternatively, consider switching up the protocol with a non-essential oil based product.
  2. Do not consume essential oils on a regular basis for “prevention.” Not only is it a waste of money, it is oftentimes unneeded and you may end up causing damage to your body. At one point of my early EO career, I was so enthusiastic about using them that I was taking a couple drops of a variety of oils in my mouth (straight, undiluted) every day and I shortly ended up with a mild case of acid reflux and really irritated my esophagus! With that said, there’s nothing wrong with adding a drop of cilantro in your guacamole and enjoying some lemon in your water if you like the taste, but let’s not overdo it. 🙂

Remember: Quality NOT Quantity is Key!

Grades of EOs

One thing to remember is that not all essential oils are created equal. In fact, many on the market are veritably worthless to your health because they are over processed, include synthetic ingredients and are not organic. When buying essential oils, make sure they are a pure, therapeutic grade.

Also, take note of those oils that are “food grade” compared to cosmetic grade. Personally, if I wouldn’t swallow it, I wouldn’t put it on my skin. So, keep a look out for that as well!

I have outlined all the steps you need to take when choosing an essential oils brand so don’t worry about making a wrong decision. I got ya covered!

What do you think? Ready to use oils now?!?

I’ve been using oils for a while now but I’m really inspired Dr. Z by your heart for the Lord and your knowledge.
I was recently diagnosed with Lymphocytic Colitis and put on a steroid to calm things down. I do NOT want to be on that med for the rest of my life. Along with other gut healing protocols, I’d appreciate your guidance.

Dr. Z, You are a blessing to share the wealth of G-d’s great abundance from creation. Thanks!

One note though. Careful, careful, careful about oil pulling. Those people with large metal cavity fillings should seek out an oral throat, nose and mouth person (hopefully one who is natural minded) because oil pulling can loosen these fillings causing them to come loose during sleep or swallowed whilst eating. Before a person knows it, that mercury is now being digested to the body. Then as the tooth is open and exposed, tooth rot and decay happens quickly. Sadly, I’ve seen this now with people who have done the oil pulling. Sure, oil pulling is good for those with the least or better with no fillings. Those people in India more than likely don’t have fillings like us western folks do.

      Hi Bret,

Thanks for the kind words and for your word of caution.

Just curious, when you say that you’ve seen this in people, are you in the dental community? I’m not challenging you, but just curious what your point of reference is because I have not found anything in the scientific literature to validate that oil pulling can cause fillings to come loose.

      Thanks!

I have 18 years in the dental field as a hygienist and oil pulling WILL NOT loosen your fillings. Any filling whether it be the white resin tooth colored filling or the silver amalgam filling is bonded to the tooth. Oil will not loosen it. Nothing will loosen it except for drilling by the dentist, unless it’s loose to begin with. Then it will fall out eventually on its own, oil pulling or not.

    Hello Dr. Z,
I want to start by thank you for providing such a rich resource of essential oil information for people. And I really like that you bring in God’s wisdom as guidance for health.

I have a question regarding clove oil. I’ve been trying what you have mentioned in adding a drop to the toothbrush along with non-fluoride toothpaste. I’ve really enjoyed this and I think it’s very effective. But I just wanted to ask if you might have had any numbing of taste buds in your family. I’ve experienced a loss of taste for about a month and I’m trying to track down the reason. Then, listening to some inner promptings, I came across an article that suggests my loss of taste could be linked with the use of concentrated clove oil. Here is the link: http://www.pharmaresearchlibrary.com/clove-oil-cheating-oil-for-taste-buds/

So, if you are able to confirm if this happens to you or anyone you know, I may dial back the concentration a bit.

    Thanks again Dr. Z.

        Hello Dr. Z,
I really enjoyed your article about pork. Though I was not raised to abstain from pork I have always wondered about it’s reference in the bible and how this has been borne out in scientific studies.

It seems like my sense of taste is slowly returning. Although it may be several other variables in my journey toward better health, I think it is linked to cutting back on clove oil for a stint. I have been using something called ‘Earth Paste’ from Redmond which I like very much. But I may try to make something similar myself. It contains some EOs but I may include a bit of clove in my blend.

        Thanks again though Dr. Z.

Absolutely. Clove oil is used to numb pain from tooth ache as it acts like a local anaesethic. I can vouch for this from personal experience and that from a qualified aromatherapist.

      Hi Tasha,

Like in finance/marketing, there’s a point of “diminishing returns” in our health. We should be cautious of using therapeutic remedies on a daily basis for extended periods of time. Just think about nature – we shouldn’t be eating bananas and avocados EVERY day. If this were part of God’s design, fruits & veggies would perpetually be available, but we we know they grow in season (naturally – not in farms).

Daily use contributes to potential resistance and I think it’s a good idea to switch things up.

3 months new to EO…8 months of research though. I am a believer that God has provided what we need and am eager to learn. In all my research though, I’ve not run across a great deal of wisdom for cardiac issues. My husband has a very low HDL (12) it is down from 17 which is the highest he’s been with vigorous Niacin and fish oil treatments from the Doc. He has also been taking coconut oil. Is there an EO out there that may help this issue? We believe it to be genetic as his parents numbers are low as well.

I see that some people asked the question I have, which brands can we trust for pure grade oils? But I cant see the answers here, they come off blocked. I am currently reading a book, The Healing Intelligence of Essential Oils (very evolutionist…not loving it! But seems to have some good info.), and the author does not recommend any US companies, and says to use from distilleries in France that have been practicing this for many generations. He gives some recommendations at the end of places to buy from. But I really struggle on my own how to trust or know if a company is legit or not. The two major MLM brands out there made me very skeptical and uncomfortable once I researched how the companies were founded and the founders background was even worst. It makes me wonder if a company that did not start out with integrity would now all of a sudden have integrity! I’m a believer as well, and to me integrity in business is a crucial part to honor God!I want to support businesses that have integrity and also make sure I’m not exposing my body to hidden synthetics.
Will really appreciate your help! Thank you!!!

      Hi Gigi,

I wish it were that simple. It’s extremely challenging to purchase products from a company whose morals line up with our own. Business is business and even many of the so-called “Christian” companies out there have skeletons in their closet.

At the end of the day, there is no #1 source of pure products out there. There will ALWAYS be a level of “impurity” because people are tampering with God’s design. Remember that there are only a few EO suppliers out there and many of the MLM reps that are talking bad about their competitor’s products are using oils from the SAME SOURCE as their competitor!

      It’s ironic, isn’t it?

I didn’t know which oil company to trust at first either. I started doing my own research. Don’t listen to the rhetoric of the nay sayers. Look for FACTS. Each company should have plenty of info available straight from themselves. When you find the one that speaks to your heart you’ll know it. In my opinion the key is knowing your oils are as pure as man can possibly make available…no added chemicals or solvents. I may like one source, Dr. Z may like another but what matters is what company you feel most confident in. Happy oiling.

Do you have a recipe for hair loss? I am having a hair loss crisis with thinning, breaking and falling hair.

      Not yet, but soon!

One study I ran across suggests peppermint can help –> Peppermint Oil Promotes Hair Growth without Toxic Signs http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4289931/

I’d say add a drop your shampoo a couple days a week and alternate with rosemary which is known to help.

Thanks so much for this wonderful information. I have received this particular pamphlet twice but I notice that in the BODY CARE directions this time it gives 5 drops lavender, peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree oil into 1 cup of coconut oil whereas the first time I got it the directions were: 10 drops of same EOs into 1/4 cup of coconut oil. Same use though.
Which is more effective? As you can see the concentration is quite different.
I’d really appreciate your comment and maybe it is a printing error?

Hi Sharon, there are several different ratios/recipes, all depends on the target action and the potency that you’re looking for.

Are the waterless diffusers as effective as the misting diffusers? We have a lot of humidity in our home already, so I am concerned that a misting diffuser would encourage mold growth.

I am second(ing) Susan’s question above (1/26/16) regarding pet (veterinary) EOs. I also have a dog with yeast in his ears and would like to know about any EOs for his ears. I have tried tea tree oil, but it bothers him and it stinks. Got any ideas? Many thanks.

Tea tree oil can be very toxic to dogs and can cause temporary paralysis among many other issues I have read. I have found the website, dogoiler.com to have valuable info on pets and the use of essential oils.

Do you recommend any brand/model of essential diffusers? Our rooms have high ceilings and are larger than 10′ x 10′. Many will work in a small space, but not larger, open rooms. I am just beginning to learn about essential oils. Lavender is my favorite, but I know there are many that will do more than make the room smell nice.

Can you use EO’s for pet health, as well? I have a dog with yeast issues in his ears.
Also, do you have a specific brand of oils you use?

I have an English Bulldog that had yeast issues. Vets were constantly giving her antibiotics. First I took her off all grains. I found Arcana works best for her. I use coconut oil with lavender to swabbed her folds and ears. I also put coconut oil in her food. She is yeast free now.

Hello Dr. Z, It is so refreshing and encouraging to find someone who can share information about essential oils from a Biblical perspective. It is much more enriching. I am a Christian living in the UK and I give regular presentations at my church on natural health. I also have a copy of your E-Book, Using God’s Medicine for an Abundant Life which I have found very useful. I make natural skin creams and CP soaps and your book has helped to inspire a lot of ideas for products. May God continue to bless you abundantly as you bless us with your knowledge.

      Hi Mindy,

Personally, I dig through PubMed. Unfortunately, there’s no “text book” that’s universally accepted as a solid resource.

Some people like the Modern Essentials Guide, which takes anecdotal and peer-reviewed evidence to suggest protocols. Others like Tisserand’s Essential Oil Safety. Both can be found on Amazon.

There are 2 new books out with research about essential oils: “Current Essential Oil Research, Vols 1 and 2” by Shawn Peterson, PhD(c), MBA and Tonia Peterson, PhD(c), MBA. They are in the process of writing a 3rd book. I sent an email to Dr. Z today with this info in it. Just got an auto reply. Hope Dr. Z reads my email!

A a newbie to EO, I am looking for someone to share some good brands for therapeutic EO. When I visit the health food stores, I’m not sure how to determine which ones are truly therapeutic grade. I realize you want to stay neutral on this site, but is there a resource I can go to for suggestions?

Great and useful information and I commend you for not pushing brands but since EO are not regulated by the FDA. I don’t know what sellers and brands to trust for food grade oils. Guidance and recommendations would be most helpful and appreciated. Especially, when buying online or in stores where bottles are sealed and the sense of smell rendered useless. I am sure I am not the only one who finds shopping for quality EO frustrating. Thank you.

          Hi Debbie,

Truth is there are ample brands out there that are a therapeutic grade. The confusion comes when people convince others to believe the idea that their favorite { presumably the one that they sell 😉 } is the ONLY pure brand on the market. Yes, I have my preferences, but that’s irrelevant.

Just like how I have my favorite brands for other products, it usually changes over time.

Bottom line is this: use the oils from a company that you trust. Find out where they source their oils from and how they process them. Then, see if the oils are safe for internal consumption. Contact the company directly. Don’t go through a distributor. Ask for this information and you’ll be empowered to make the best decisions for you and your family. 🙂

I got into oils about a year ago after being told about them from a co-worker. She was a strong believer of one company. I started doing research and found another company that was a lot less in cost than the one she loved. After smelling and using some of mine she ordered them herself. She still swears by a few of the original blends but she has started venturing out and trying other oil companies herself. I have found several companies I like and trust and order from them all. I started using them to combat thyroid and hormonal issues. I can say that I am prescription meds free and all my numbers are excellent thanks to EO’s. I have no side effects like I did with the meds and feel like my old self used too!! I happened upon your facebook/blogs by doing research to help my parents with some ailments and my mom loves using the oils. Thank you for your “common sense” approach and for sharing your knowledge in this field.
