Can Frankincense Oil Kill Cancer and Boost Immunity?

Frankincense Oil and Cancer

When Americans think of frankincense oil today they think back to the Christmas story. The gifts of the Magi – gold, frankincense, and myrrh – were carried a great distance specifically for the new King that their star-watching indicated. In the past, scholars and health researchers have mused and debated over them.

  • Who were the Magi? What was the significance of the gifts?
  • Were they for the infant Jesus or for a much bigger purpose?
  • Did they give Him frankincense oil or just the resin?

In 2013, the University of Leicester conveniently published just before Christmas that has rekindled this theory. According to their press release, the Omani government-funded research has (for the first time) uncovered that frankincense has the ability to target cancer cells in late-stage ovarian cancer patients. And this all appeared to be due to AKBA (acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid). (1) According to lead researcher Kamla Al-Salmani,

“After a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing the cancer cells. Frankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects. This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.”

It has become glaringly obvious that boswellic acid (BA) is a compound fit to kill cancer cells, and researchers have tested frankincense oil to determine if it can play a role in oncology.

However, ask any chemist and they will tell you that BAs are too large to pass the steam distillation process. Nonetheless, there are still bad essential oil studies that claim they are indeed part of frankincense oil. Subsequently, the jury is still out as to the exact mechanism(s) explaining why frankincense is so beneficial to cancer patients.

Advances in recent research suggest that Beta-elemene – a cancer fighting terpene found in frankincense and myrrh with the ability to cross the blood brain barrier – may be partly responsible. As stated by the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center,

“Beta-elemene is a compound found in plants such as celery, mint, and in many others used in traditional medicine. Although the pure form is not used as dietary supplement, some cancer patients use herbs high in beta-elemene as treatment. Beta-elemene was shown to prevent growth of cancer cells in laboratory cells by different mechanisms. A few poorly designed studies done in humans showed that it may improve quality of life in cancer patients. It is unclear if raw herbs containing beta-elemene have the same effects in humans. More research is needed.” (2)

Some even suggest that the amount of β-elemene that frankincense and myrrh contain could very well explain why so many people claim that both oils have been instrumental to them beating cancer God's way. (3)

The healing benefits of frankincense have traditionally centered on disease prevention and anti-inflammatory properties, and researchers have been able to confirm that boswellic acids contain a potent ability to modify the immune system as well. (3) Part of having a more efficient immune system is the regulation of inflammation, as well, which can have effects topically or systemically. (4)

This is why it's important to supplement with Boswellia resins. Formulated by my friend Sunil Pai, MD Integrative Medicine expert and medical director of Sanjevani Integrative Medicine Health & Lifestyle Center, Bosmeric-SR™ is the strongest natural supplement for pain and inflammation support. Here are the specs:

  • Clinically tested, this unique sustained release formulation of patented ingredients delivers superior absorption and release over an 8 hour period.
  • Each bi-layered caplet delivers the highest dosages available of Curcumin C3 Complex® (curcumin longa) [250 mg]; Boswellin® PS (Polysal) – 35% boswellic acids + 10% AKBBA + 35% Polysal™ (boswellia serrata); and Ginger Extract (zingiber officinale) 20% Gingerols. In addition BioPerine® (piper nigrum) is added to further enhance bio-availability.
  • These ingredients support inflammatory physiological response mechanisms which are critical to the health of the entire body and have been shown to play a crucial role in supporting cardiovascular, immune, neurological, gastrointestinal, joint and connective tissue systems.
  • Research now suggest that most, if not all disease, begins with inflammation.

At the end of the day, once we know the basic properties of an herb, root and resin we are able to determine the best ways to utilize it. Let's take a closer look at what the components of frankincense mean for our daily lives…

Frankincense Cancer Research

Used because of its anti-inflammatory properties, the various Boswellia species have been a “go-to” or natural healers for centuries because of its ability to help with a myriad of health concerns like learning disorders, gastrointestinal dysfunction and skin conditions. New cancer research, has uncovered that the medicinal uses of frankincense can reach well beyond this.

While we do know that the various forms of frankincense (essential oils, extracts, pure resin, etc.) have the potential to fight cancer, much is left to be understood, making this a controversial topic in the natural health and research world.

Current research demonstrates anti-mutagenic and apoptotic (programmed cell death) abilities. Though the results have occurred in lab tests and we have yet to see how to best replicate these results in active cancer in humans, the demonstrated results remain. Researchers found that boswellic acids are “cytotoxic to ovarian cancer cells at pharmacologically achievable concentrations” and “may form the basis of a novel anticancer treatment for ovarian cancer, perhaps alongside conventional chemotherapy.” (4)

Studies continue to emerge, demonstrating similar effects on bladder (source), breast (source) and skin (source) cancers.

For those who have added frankincense oil to their cancer care plan, the benefits may go beyond anti-tumor effects. Conventional treatment is often still selected by patients, and can be more painful and difficult than the symptoms of cancer itself. Brain cancer patients, for example, sometimes experience swelling in the head called cerebral edema after their tumors have been removed. Steroid treatment is common but also associated with difficult side effects and complications.

Frankincense, on the other hand, has shown remarkable effects against this particular problem. In 2011, a clinical trial evaluating 44 individuals monitored high doses of frankincense resin as a remedy for cerebral edema. In 60% of the patients, the swelling was reduced by 75% or more. The concluding remarks called for frankincense to be prescribed for cerebral edema in these circumstances, avoiding the struggles of steroid therapy. (11) Whether the essential oil can help remains to be proven clinically. Nonetheless, applying diluted frankincense of cerebral edema is a common practice amongst essential oil users battling cancer.

Overshadowed the past several hundred years by its role in the “Christmas Story,” frankincense is finally getting the attention it deserves as one of the most viable healing agents on the planet. The journal Oncology Letters published an article late last year that highlights the ability of this Biblical tree to kill cancer cells; specifically the MCF-7 and HS-1 cell lines, which cause breast and other tumors. (12) The essential oil has also been used with much success to treat issues related to digestion, the immune system, oral health, respiratory concerns and stress/anxiety.

Another promising property of frankincense is its potential to fight cancer. In several studies, frankincense has demonstrated anti-cancer properties and the ability to mitigate many different kinds of cancer cells. (13) As more studies are conducted, the implications of this ability will be exciting to watch unfold!

Arguably the most potent medicinal EO out there, recent research studies suggest that frankincense not only kills cancer cells, but it also promotes health and vitality in neighboring non-cancerous cells! To help prevent getting sick and boost your immune system, simply follow the advice below and take some frankincense with a carrier oil!

An Important Note

Essential oils are transdermal and work at the cellular level, and each species has distinct properties that can help cancer patients. Also, please recognize that specific species that a given company sells will NOT be addressed in this article, and we cannot correlate these data to species that your favorite brand(s) may sell. However, the chemical constituents in various species are so similar, that it is quite possible that all of the species will contain similar properties.

Also, let's remember peer-reviewed articles discuss the success clinical researchers have experienced in using various essentials oils to prevent, stop and even reverse the growth of various cancer lines in animal and human cell studies. It is important to keep in mind that a vast majority of these studies are based off of cells in a petri dish. Subsequently, many experts and critics of using essential oils for cancer therapy insist that we cannot extrapolate the data from these studies to live, in vivo cancer patients. Even though there is merit to what these people say, let's not throw the baby out with the bath water. The burden of proof is on the critic in this case. Thousands of thousands of testimonials and case studies alone should awaken us to the realization that EOs can be quite effective in helping people with cancer.

With that said, I set out to see what some of my social media fans had to say about their personal experience with essential oils and cancer, and I conducted an informal survey…

H.K. Lin, PhD

In addition to being an Associate Professor Department of Urology (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center), Dr. Lin is quickly becoming the essential oil research guru of the 21st century. He's actually a pretty big deal. His research on frankincense oil is unparalleled and he's been able to uncover some pretty profound findings such as:

  • Frankincense oil derived from Boswellia carteri induces bladder tumor cell and Boswellia sacra does the same with breast cancer cells; meaning that they target cancerous cells by killing them and leave the healthy cells alone.
  • Frankincense oil derived from Boswellia sacra represses signaling pathways and cell cycle regulators that have been proposed as therapeutic targets for cancer.
  • Suppression of cellular network formation and disruption of spheroid development of cancer cells, suggests that frankincense oil derived from Boswellia sacra may be effective for advanced breast cancers as well as for cancer prevention.

Having already published several articles supporting the cancer-fighting characteristics of essential oils, Dr. Lin has set out to change the course of healthcare by developing scientific evidence to support the use of essential oils to fight cancer and other diseases.

Recently, Dr. Lin reached out to me via email with this message:

Dr. Zielinski, I just want to let you know we had a bladder cancer case report published by Integrative Cancer Therapies early this week. (14)

Based on university policy, I cannot be affiliated with any commercial company and cannot endorse any commercial product, I used a generic name in this report.

Along with our previous publications on frankincense oil, we have reported the following observations:

  1. Frankincense oil induces potent cytotoxicity in various types of cancer cells but not their normal counterparts.
  2. Unlike chemotherapy drugs, frankincense oil specifically targets tumor cells but not fast-growing cells. This might be “no observable adverse effects” using frankincense oil.
  3. Frankincense oil prevents cellular network formation of tumor cells.
  4. Frankincense oil causes the breakdown of multicellular tumor spheroids, which might be the cause of drug resistant.
  5. Frankincense oil simultaneously activates multiple signaling pathways including the caspase pathway leading to apoptosis. Is this similar to the use of “drug cocktails” in complicate diseases?

Based on we reported human case studies so far, we described the following observations in humans:

  1. Frankincense oil induces apoptosis of tumor cells.
  2. Frankincense oil does not have no noticeable adverse effects when appropriate dose is applied.
  3. Frankincense oil attracts infiltration of inflammatory cells to the tumor site with unknown mechanism.

A few months ago, the federal government announced a “Cancer Moonshot Cancer program” led by Vice President Biden. They vowed to conquer cancer using lots of resources and modern technologies. Unfortunately, no one is, or willing to, pay any attention on any botanical product; there is just no resource in this “forgotten” field.

All participants involved in the Cancer Moonshot Program described that they will have “solutions” for cancers few years later. However, my main concern is how about the people who are fighting against cancers now. Can we provide anything to do the help while they are dealing with the deadly disease?

Interesting, huh?

More Than Just Cancer

People who have added Boswellia into their natural health cancer care plan may find themselves experiencing double-benefits from this miracle essential oil.

For many cancer patients, there's a time when the treatment becomes worse than the cancer itself. It is as this point that quality of life and symptom suppression is the focal point for many diagnosed with this deadly disease. Debilitating in-and-of itself, these cancer treatment side effect can make having cancer absolutely miserable.

Take, for instance, brain cancer patients who experience cerebral edema (swelling in the head) after having their tumors irradiated. Typically, these people are treated with dexamethasone and other corticosteroids to control the swelling, but this is done at a great cost because the deadly complications of steroids are limitless. Unfortunately, these people suffer toxic overload from the drugs that are supposed to help them in the first place and get headaches, migraines, and may even deal with blurred vision because of the steroid treatments.

Thankfully, frankincense offers a natural, viable solution to this horrible issue. Back in 2011, the journal Cancer published the results of a 44 person clinical trial evaluating how brain edema fared in brain cancer patients that were randomly assigned to radiotherapy. Astoundingly, 60% of the patients displayed 75% reduction or greater in cerebral swelling after being treated with 4200 mg/day of frankincense! (15) These results are so significant that scientists are urging the medical community to consider prescribing this potent essential oil instead of steroids for cancer patients assigned to radiotherapy.

We hope this spreads like wildfire within cancer treatment circles. Who knows what could happen if more people utilized this approach. As we've seen above, if Boswellia serrata can kill cancer cells and prevent tumors from growing, the sky's the limit for folks who follow natural health guidelines.

Frankincense and Immune Function

A growing body of research has recently unlocked the doors to our understanding of why frankincense is so beneficial to our health. In a study published by Phytotherapy Research, for instance, when mice took 1-10 mg of Boswellia serrata orally it was discovered that multiple levels of their immune systems were stimulated including: (16)

  • Cytokines (interferon gamma, interleukin-4, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha)
  • Delayed hypersensitivity reaction (early 24 hours, delayed 48 hours)
  • Immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM)
  • T-cell interactions (i.e. CD4/CD8, which are generally low in AIDS patients)

In layman's terms, frankincense can boost the immune system like no other! Two fundamental ways this is accomplished is by proliferating lymphocytes (white blood cells, which are the body's primary defense team) and by keeping inflammation at bay (which is arguably the primary risk factor for most chronic diseases). This may also explain why Boswellia serrata is so effective in treating autoimmune conditions like bronchial asthma, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and ulcerative colitis.

Implement frankincense into your natural health regimen today. The essential oil can be used in vaporizers with ease to treat respiratory conditions. A salve is effective for skin issues. And, an all-natural, organic supplement is fantastic for everything in between!

Frankincense Oil Recommendations

To help boost immunity and as a cancer prevention technique:

  • Add 1 drop of frankincense oil in 1 teaspoon of carrier oil (like coconut), and consume first thing in the morning. This is not intended to be a longterm solution and should only be utilized for 2-3 weeks at a time. Discontinue use immediately upon signs of adverse reactions.
  • Put 1-2 drops in a soft gel capsule to prevent esophageal irritation.
  • Add 3 drops each of frankincense and myrrh oils to a diffuser.

And don't forget about taking Bosmeric SR!

To address tumor and malignant growths consider:

  • Applying diluted frankincense on the tumor directly, and on the bottoms of your feet. 2 drops of carrier oil per drop of frankincense is a popular approach

When it comes to drug interactions and contraindications, there are literally textbooks devoted to the study of essential oil safety and, as a trained researcher and doctor, I think it’s important to note that there is virtually no research out there discussing how essential oils interact with drugs in human clinical trials. This means that essential oil safety is still a wild frontier in the science community and no one really knows (for certain) how essential oils will interact with drugs or your body.

Nonetheless, properly diluting your essential oils is fundamental to safety and effectiveness because they are highly concentrated plant compounds. To help you along your journey, I have a created an easy-to-use dilution guide that you can download for FREE to make sure that all of your topical applications are safe and effective for the entire family.

      Hi Stacey,

I wouldn’t say that I disagree with Robert. We are basically the same thing. We both acknowledge that boswellic acids are not the reason for any purported cancer-killing effects. However, like he mentions in this article (as well as in his book http://amzn.to/2pr1LaC) frankincense essential oils does indeed contain cancer-fighting properties. I agree with what he says, there are other oils, myrrh, orange, lemongrass and others, that are even more potent than frankincense.

I have skin cancer on my scalp. The first time it appeared it was a mole that was irritated. I thought it was a pimple so I squeezed it, but it continued to get more and more sore. Then it formed a yellowish, scaly crust on and around it, but the scalp underneath the skin was very sore and itchy.

Initially, I thought it would heal up and go away, but after 4 weeks it didn’t. I started putting frankincense-carterii oil on it and after 2-3 weeks, the crusty part fell off after my shower.

It must have spread once I stopped applying the oil because a lot of little sore “mole” spots started showing up on my head. I stopped applying it because I ran out and I thought it was gone so I didn’t need to anymore.

Anyway, I realized that I must have stopped the frankincense too soon. I started the EO application again, however, now I only apply it before bed (sleep with a towel covering my pillow so it doesn’t stain or soak through to my pillow), and directly after I shower in the morning. Surprisingly enough it doesn’t appear greasy after my hair dries.

Now, I can feel all those little nasty spots drying up again. I will continue the EO for another month after the spots are all gone this time. So glad I didn’t go the western route… I would much rather have oil in my hair than have to undergo disfiguring surgery and toxic drugs any day.

My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 adrenal cortical carcinoma APRIL of 2015. She had her tumor and right adrenal gland removed. Unfortunately it was in her lymph nods. The cancer is now in both lungs. She’s exhausted the few treatments that are available and now the Dr’s have no other treatments. I started her on the budwig diet and started I would like to also try essential oils as well. But I’ve looked online to find what would work. Is there any information as to what essential oils have been tested in laboratory for her type of cancer?

Hello, thankso a lot for the information. I am so glad that I found this website and used frankincense for my mother. She was diagnosed with breast cancer on March, 2016. She started her chemo around June and had 8 chemos. Her CEA was 130 initially that went down to 4 after chemo. Now she is on only immune Therapy and started taking her frankincense orally only in the morning 2 drops in a capsule. She massages the oil with coconut oil on her tumor around 3 times and also she is using the oil in diffuser almost everyday. I am waiting to see her report to find out the change in results after using frankincense. She feels happier than before and there is a noticeable change in her size of the small nodules on her forehead, ear.

Dr. Is it harmful for her to consume it for a long time?

    Hello,

My mother is diagnosed with Stage 4 bladder cancer which is spread to her liver and stomach. We were looking for alternate medication for her recovery and have come across the uses of frankiencense oil. Luckly i live an area in the middle where this is found in abundance in its purest solid form (non oil). We wanted to know what would be the most suitable and correct amount and mechanism to provide frankiencese to her in her case. I would appreciate any suggestion or direction in this regards. We are in an urgent need of some clarity.

Turkey tail mushrooms are good to treat cancer and reishi mushrooms as well. You can do quick research on line and find all you need to know. Be careful where you get yours from though because they can absorb the toxins in the air and dirt they are grown in. I get mine from fungi perfecti but i am sure there is more good places to get it as well.

I have stage 4 appendiceal adenocarcinoma cancer. It is in its late stages – peritineum, bowel, vagina, some in liver.
Can you get abnormal bleeding when applying 2 drops of frankinsense oil (boswellia) with 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (takes 2 days to use) over abdomen area twice a day. I started to bleed uncontrollably wondering if that was because of the cancer or the oil. Many thanks. Leonie

I understand that you cannot diagnose or make a direct claim about an oil, but I thought that with your experience, you might guide us in making a decision. My dear friend is battling a recurrence/metastisis of her Clear cell ovarian cancer. She has been integrating more traditional treatment with nutritional/supplemental and now EO support. She has been using frankincense externally and internally. She is about to start chemo and was wondering if she needed to stop her daily dose (external or topical application) of Frankincense. The opinions seem to be mixed. I know it supports immunity, but does it boost it or support it? And do you think it can interfere with the effectiveness of the chemo or enhance it? Does it depend on the specific chemo being used, the timing of the application/ingestion of the oils?
I know it is not black and white and the decision is ultimately hers to make, but any advice/guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
BTW, I just finished the EOR2 summit and it was incredible. Thank you so much for providing the forum!! Andrea

      Hi Andrea,

So sorry, but this is definitely out of the scope of this website forum. There are so many variables that can affect your friend’s decision and I’m legally not able to provide medical advice. She really needs to contact her oncologist and pharmacist to confirm whether or not she should discontinue her frankincense use.

Thank you for you understanding and I’m so glad you enjoyed EOR2!!

You need to read up on turkey tail mushrooms and reishi mushrooms they can help along with chemo or radiation. I get mine from fungi perfecti but there are other places to get it as well i would say. Good luck, I have done a lot of research on natural cures so feel free to ask me about them, I will help all I can.

Hi Dr Z and Group at large,
My friend Cindy and I are advance practice RN’s and she has been doing research on my behalf over the past couple of months as I have been battling breast cancer since March 2014. Recent serial CT’s from Oct 2015, when I was hospitalized for 11 days and that radiologist noted a sub centimeter nodule in my left lung among the other findings, to one in Dec 2015 showing the same nodule had grown by 1 mm, to the most recent one done on June 22, 2016 which shows the same nodule has grown another 1mm and now there is a second sub centimeter nodule in my right lung.
I have not been on chemo agents or aromatase inhibitors since last Sept but was supposed to be on them for the rest of my life due to the nature of the cancer and all the missed steps along the path initially.
Cindy would like me to start Frankenscence oil internally right away. One of my patients swears by Oregano oil for immune boosting /cancer prevention properties. My labs are wonky. I basically have no immune system and no parastalsis do my guts don’t work. I’ve lost 30+ lbs since Jan. Yet, my providers where I live said I needed no f/u!
I found a new oncologist and we have ordered some tests. Waiting for insurance. In the meantime I would like to know more about these oils. Peer reviewed articles? Empirical data? Your thoughts on Oregano oil? Will Fankenscence oil potentially change lab readings so much that it could mask underlining disease processes that we are trying to find at this point? I’m all go starting anything orang ic and natural if it will boost my immunity and help me fight but I also need to know what’s going on so I’m not sure if I should wait to start supplements like these until the oncologist has a clear picture and baseline then start these to see if it will help? Thoughts?

    Hi,
I have stage 4 Colon Cancer that has spread to my liver. I have 4 tumors on my liver that we are working on shrinking. The chemo has been very successful so far. We are hoping to shrink them enough so we can do surgery and remove them. I do have DoTerra Essential Oils. Would Frankinsense be helpful for me to use? What other essential oil would you suggest for me to use for this? And how would be the best way to use it? Thanks for answering my questions! May God bless you!

I did do chemo but it almost killed me. I started using oils and ningxia daily and started getting better. I take 7 drops of frankenscence with coconut oil in a capsule 2 times a day a use it topically every night. People and my dr can not believe how well I am doing. I had lost 60 pounds and have gained 25 back. I look good and feel good. I still have cancer but my quality of life is great

Can this be used for patients with Lymphoma? For such patients the doctors get concerned when the Lymphocyte levels go high and Frankincense seems to increase the Lymphocyte level & WBC levels too. Wouldn’t doctors be alarmed when they see the WBC levels & Lymphocyte levels go up in such patients when they are already high?

I rub Sacred Frankincense diluted with coconut oil on the bottom of her feet, rub it on the site of tumor where she had surgery and around her neck and diffuse lavender every single night and drink Ningxia Red juice once a day. I can tell you my daughter is doing great..Thank God for this essential oils..

      Deborah,

You don’t HAVE to do anything. Just keep in mind essential oils are very concentrated. If you’re taking them daily, internally we highly recommend a carrier oil in the capsules to help distribute the oils so it’s not so hard on your stomach.

SORRY… TYPOS IN OTHER SUBMISSION – CORRECTIONS BELOW:
I got diagnosed in 2013 with non-Hodgkin (NH) Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma (DLBCL). I have had 3 tumors. I did not do the chemo nor radiation that was recommended. I was told that DLBCL is one of the easiest cancers to handle (The Oncologist actually said “cure”.)
I have done a number of natural-type treatments. I didn’t discover Frankincense until the 2nd tumor. I was also doing some other natural treatments at the same time but the 2nd tumor went away extremely rapidly after starting with the Frankincense.
I am now treating the 3rd tumor – which I’m told could be a continuation of the second since the “3rd” is in a slightly different area.
I believe that you cannot go wrong with EOs. Do your research and evaluate for yourself. I use others besides Frankincense as well.
One other thing I’ve been told is that cancer “adjusts” to treatments, so there are several sites that recommending changing the treatments periodically.

Regarding the gifts of the Magi: how is it possible that frankincense and myrrh were valued up there with gold? In the year 1 AD, a competent dentist was centuries away. Considering the properties of Frank+Myrrh gums, a softened mixture would be just right to pack into an infected tooth (otherwise a life threatening condition).

      Hi Linda,

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer much the same as your husband. I changed by diet completely and do much of what you have mentioned. I cut out sugar completely as well. I have read that frankincense is actually used in the Mediterranean much the same way BCG treatment is administered into the bladder and with much success. I have to say, the BCG treatment although helped tremendously but not without a horrible effect. I now have chronic inflammation of the bladder and that is taking months to heal. I am having to be very mindful of what I eat and drink. Everyone reacts differently to BCG and for me I did not want chemo/radiation. I am now taking Boswellia serrato although I gather that Boswellia carteri is for bladder issues. As Dr. Z notes below always check with a doctor or pharmacist (compound pharmacist is best. It is important to know what medications may not be compatible with frankincense. It is also important to do a lot of reading on bladder issues as there are lots of forums you can join to see what other like folks are doing.

Not that I know of, but that really has little relevance in the viability of this is a cancer therapy. Randomized clinical trials are not the end-all of research.

This article puts it well,”All RCTs do is show that what you’re dealing with is not snake oil,” says Williams. “They don’t tell you the critical information you need, which is which patients are going to benefit from the treatment.”

      http://www.apa.org/monitor/2010/09/trials.aspx

And we know from countless testimonials that essential oils are NOT “snake oils.” 😉

    Dr. Z,
Hi my dad just recently was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. He is scheduled to do a Whipple with Dr. Meja at The Liver Institute in Dallas. He will probably have to do some chemo or radiation afterwards. I want to get him on some oils right away. Are there any specific ones you recommend in addition to the Frank?
Also, how would you suggest he apply the Frank? Is orally better than topical?

Liz, hope your dad is doing well. My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in Oct 2010 and had the Whipple operation in Jan 2011. We did not know about oils back then but for your encouragement, my dad’s has been cancer free and not more issues.

        Allison,
thank you that is kind of you. The surgery did not go as planned. the pancreas was too engulfed in tumors for the surgeon to be able to remove anything it would have done more damage. it is neuroendocrine though, meaning this gives him more time. It moves alot slower than other pancreatic cancer. Now my dad really is relying on this oil to do a miracle, He also have monthly injections indefinitely called octreotide to help slow tumore growth but it will not shrink them.

      Hi Irma,

It all depends on what your goals would be. Some people eat kale every day to boost their immune system, and others take vitamin C to prevent the flu. When it comes to daily regimens, I come from the standpoint that we should mix stuff up.

Do I enjoy oils every day? For sure, but I don’t do the same thing everyday.

      Hi Eso,

Various reports claim that thyme and frankincense EOs is effective at fighting against cancer (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4070586/ & http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3258268/). We need to keep in mind that these are in vitro studies (cells in a petri dish) and not on human patients. However, if used safely, I have known of many reports of people receiving great benefit by putting a couple drops in a capsule and taking once a twice a day, or even applying diluted oils over the area where their tumor is located.

His follow up Ct showed it moved to his liver now stage 4 all else was clear, hes back on chemo pills with injections every 3 weeks. Is 2-3 drops of frankensense in a bottle of liquid with coconut oil the correct amount or could it be stronger?

I know this mostly is about cancer.
But I have a friend with Parkinsons, could the oil be of any help for him?
He refuses to take medicin, but we still don’t know was causes his illness.
To me Parkinsons sounds like either toxines in the body or maybe lack of oil. So I thougt to give the Frankincense Oil a chance? Or wouldn’t it helpful?
    Thank you for your help!
    Kind regards,

      Hi Liliane!

      You on to something!!

“Frankincense (乳香 Rǔ Xiāng; Boswellia Species), the resinous extract from the trees of the genus Boswellia, has been used for centuries in cultural ceremonies, as a cosmetic agent, and as a traditional medicine to treat a variety of ailments, especially inflammatory diseases including asthma, arthritis, cerebral edema, chronic pain syndrome, chronic bowel diseases, cancer, and some other illnesses. Boswellic acids are the active compounds of frankincense and AKBA (3-O-acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid) is the most important and effective acid among them. Some studies have shown that the use of frankincense can also improve the learning and enhance the memory in animals and human beings. It seems that frankincense might have a potential ability to be used as an alternative natural medicine not only for chronic and inflammatory diseases but also for brain and memory disorders.”

Hello! I am very interested in using the frankincense as prevention. I normally drink lemon water in the morning. Can I put in the oil, even if I add the lemon, or should I not mix it with the lemon? I have had a hormonal imbalance with abnormal periods. My gyn has done testing and found no abnormality. Would it be helpful to topically apply in the area and perhaps breasts as prevention? Thank you!

Hi – Very interesting article! My husband has stage IV lung cancer. He is doing chemo and natural therapy. We have a natural doctor who does blood work, gives him supplements and IV vit C therapy. So we are fighting this from all angles. Could we add frankincense oil to his treatment plan? If so, how would you suggest using it?

    Thank you!

Hi, I just wanted to say how glad I am to see the news about frankincense spreading. I started reading about it a few months ago and have found it helpful. 4 1/2 years ago I found I had breast cancer. It was inflammatory breast cancer and spread so fast it was amazingly painful and scary, but I avoided the medical route, went through weeks of study and prayer, found many natural treatments, and eventually it died, only to return 8 months later and stronger than before. I once again fought it, harder that time, and more aggressively, and finally had it stopped, but did go in and have the breast removed. Recently, I experienced again the feeling of painful swelling start in the other breast. This time I had Frankincense on hand, having just ordered some the prior month. I applied it with a bit of organic coconut oil to the whole area and lymph nodes under my arm. The swelling started decreasing immediately, and the pain, as well.I am now certain that when my next HCG testing comes back, it will show a negative for further cancer growth. God created us, created the plants and trees to be food and medicine for our bodies. How grateful I am for finding this out, and for having such a lovely walk with Him as He shows me His ways. Thanks for the great article.

        Hi Gemma,

We need to keep the conversation “brand neutral” so we can continue to deliver this evidence-based information.

With that said, there are very FEW frankincense oil supplies in the world. Meaning that much of what we see on the market is the same product and each company simply private labels it. The main difference lies within the individual company purity standards, whether they adulterate (dilute) & add needless fillers.

There are several quality, therapeutic grade brands out there. Here’s what I do:

Ask the company that you’re interested in for a report of their sourcing and quality standards. (indigenously sourced, sustainable, organic, non-gmo, etc..)
Check online for some positive and negative reports – be careful to not let MLM propaganda get in the way of truth. (EVERYONE’s brand is the best, right? Especially, when they’re selling something).
Contact the company and see if their grade is safe for internal use.
Try a couple, and test for yourself.
Lemon, lavender and peppermint are common and relatively inexpensive and you should get a good gauge to see if this brand is for you or not.

Remember, many of these companies get their oils from the same supplier. They just private label them.

Gemma brand is not important. You need an oil that is 100% pure. Unadulterated. Not diluted.

I have been using this daily as a preventative but find that diluting it usually ends up with most of the oil stuck to the sides of the glass… I now just place a drop under the tongue then drink a glass of water. Can you see anything untoward that may arise from administering it this way. Thanks

Some people experience sensitivity to the oils, and it can irritate skin tissue. This is why taking oils in a capsule is always advisable. 🙂

    Dear Dr. Z,
A little 5 year old boy in my Bible ministry class was just diagnosed with leukemia. I’m not sure which form it is as I have not received complete details but he is starting a conventional treatment of chemo this morning.
I was hoping you could direct me to some websites on traditional medicine, essential oil use, nutrition and anything else that will be an addition to the therapy the parents have chosen. We are all born again children of God so we trust that He will ultimately choose the outcome but, as a CPT, plant strong nutrition advisor and a big proponent of holistic medicine, I want to give the parents all the beautiful options of which they may not be familiar.
I have passed your and Dr. Axe’s websites on to many folks but am hoping for something a bit more specific for children.
    Thank you, my brother.

Hello Elizabeth. I would highly recommend that you go the this website… http://www.lunasin.com and check it out. There is a list of over 60 research papers on the use of lunasin to ‘turn off’ epigenetic markers, as well as to stop the growth of cancer cells. I know of a product which makes this lunasin 100% bioavailable to the human body. Clinical trials, using this product, are currently underway at Cleveland Clinic. I have helped several people successfully battle cancer, including a little girl with leukemia, with this. Please feel free to contact me if you would like further information. I will be keeping this little boy in prayer! I can easily be reached on my Facebook page…I have a VERY LARGE family, so that’s the page you want to look for…God Bless You, and thank you, Dr Eric, for all you are doing to give HOPE to others!!

Hello, unfortunately, the research is silent about specific dose recommendations. From my experience, many people in your mother’s experience apply diluted frankincense and other cancer-fighting oils directly over the kidneys, bottoms of the feet, as well as taking a couple drops in an enteric-coated capsule.

      Hi Michelle,

I’ve known several people who place therapeutic grade essential oils in capsules with great results. However, I’m not familiar with any research supporting the use of a carrier oil such as almond for time release capsules. If it’s a food grade almond oil, then I don’t see any harm, but just wondering if it would lessen the therapeutic effect…
